On-rim vs off-rim tire changes: what to tell your mobile technician
FxMyRide · Updated 2026-10-16
A seasonal tire change is easier to quote when you can explain how your tires are stored. The first question is often whether the tires are already mounted on a second set of wheels.
What is an on-rim tire change?
If each seasonal tire is already mounted on its own wheel, the job involves swapping the wheel-and-tire assemblies. The technician still needs to check the vehicle requirements, fitment and condition. Ask what checks are included in your quote.
What is an off-rim change?
If you have one set of wheels and two sets of tires, the tires must be removed from those wheels and the other set mounted. This requires appropriate tire-changing and balancing equipment. A business offering mobile wheel swaps may not offer every mounting service.
What information should you have ready?
Your vehicle year, make and model; tire size from the sidewall; whether your tires are on wheels; your location; and any damage or vibration concerns. Do not assume a mobile service can provide repairs, balancing, storage or new tires without confirmation.
